New “urban winery” opens on Powell Boulevard.

Teutonic Wine Company, a new urban winery and tasting room, has opened at S.E. 20th Avenue and Powell Boulevard. The winemaker and co-owner, Barnaby Tuttle, reports that he was the Wine Director at Papa Haydn some years ago. The tasting room serves a gamut of Teutonic’s Alsatian and Mosel-style wines as well as Rainier beer in can. Barnaby and his wife Olga play vinyl records all evening. The winery is also home to “The Wild Hunt”, a converted school bus serving Nordic tavern fare at lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday. Teutonic is also hosting a summer seafood series with guest chefs and winemakers called Seafood Sundays, which began on Sunday, May 29th. These will take place from 1 to 7 p.m., with ample outdoor seating, food and drink. Minors are welcome at these daytime events. On June 12, Seafood Sunday with author Andrea Slonecker and Division Wine Company; on June 19, Crab Boil with Teutonic Wine Company; on June 26: Chicken Fried Razor Clams with Teutonic Wine Company; and on July 3, Smoked Salmon and Pickled Herring with Dag Sundby and Johan Vineyards. Southeast Portland Rotary makes four grants.

As part of its ongoing “small community grants” program, the Southeast Portland Rotary Club on May 2nd presented checks to the local chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, FIRST Robotics Team 1432 (“The Metal Beavers”), the Rogue Pack student drama program in Sellwood, and the Moreland Presbyterian Church Christmas Dinner program. These and many other community expenditures made by the Rotary Club, which meets at noon on Mondays except during national holidays in the Eastmoreland Golf Club Clubhouse (open to the public), are funded by the annual “Wreath Auction” event on the first Saturday in December — 5 to 9 p.m. — to be held this year for the first time at Oaks Park. June is last month for Fido’s Indoor Dog Park.

Fido’s Indoor Dog Park, south of Holgate Boulevard at 4949 S.E. 25th Avenue, is closing on June 26. Owner Josephine Cetta says, “It has been the most difficult decision of my life, but I’ve decided to retire. Last summer I found out I have a brain tumor, and although it’s benign, the tumor will continue to grow, and will eventually require surgery. Due to this, I feel it’s important to make my health a priority. I know it will be disappointing for you and your dogs to have to find other daycare and boarding options, but I want to thank all of you for trusting Fido’s with your dog, and supporting us.”

Inner Southeast sculptor displays at Sellwood bank.

Local sculptor Ted Shillock is showing and selling his marble sculpture at the Umpqua Bank branch on S.E. 13th and Bidwell Street, across from the Sellwood Branch Library, through the month of June. His exhibition there began in early May.

Anniversary for “LoLo’s Westmoreland Barber Shop”.

Laura Mesplay has been the owner-operator of “LoLo’s Westmoreland Barber Shop” for ten years — and this month she is celebrating that anniversary. She tells THE BEE, “This is the oldest barber shop in the Sellwood-Westmoreland neighborhood; the building was constructed in 1926, and from talking with my customers I believe this shop has been in business for at least 75 years. We continue to run it as a traditional family barber shop. I personally have been cutting hair in Portland for 34 years, and the other barbers in the shop have been cutting hair with me for over a quarter century in three different locations; they are truly my best friends.” The shop with the distinctive barber pole in front is situated between Fat Alberts’ Breakfast Café and the Limelight Restaurant and Lounge, just north of Bybee, at 6674 S.E. Milwaukie Avenue. The shop is open every day except Sundays and holidays.

In June, Robert Schlegel & Rob Schlegel, artist father and poet son, share the exhibit at Roll-Up Photo Studio and Gallery in Sellwood. The exhibition began with a first-Friday reception featuring both, and a reading by Rob Schlegel. The exhibition runs June 3 through 30, and is free and open to the public, at 1715 S.E. Woodstock real estate agent teaches Red Cross classes.

The John L. Preschoolers display over a hundred paintings in Foster-Powell.

From June 4 to June 30, three locations in the Foster-Powell neighborhood will display over 100 pieces of art created by infants, toddlers, and preschoolers who attend Wild Lilac Child Development Community. Holgate Library (7905 S.E. Holgate Boulevard) will exhibit 104 canvases on the tops of the bookshelves in its children’s section, while Pieper Café (6504 S.E. Foster Road) will showcase three giant collaborative works of art on its walls. Wild Lilac’s own garden (3829 S.E. 74th) will feature a brand new 40-foot community mural, as well.

Southside Swap & Play offers summer special.

Southside Swap & Play Indoor Playspace, in classroom space at Our Lady of Sorrows, S.E. 52nd at Woodstock Boulevard, announces that a “new member special” will be in effect through the end of July, by which the $30 initiation fee will be waived.
