AUGUST 2

SMILE free summer concerts continue this evening: SMILE, the Sellwood-Westmoreland neighborhood association, is again presenting free concerts open to all on Saturdays in July and August, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Moreland Presbyterian Church parking lot on S.E. 19th, just south of Bybee Boulevard. Tonight it’s “Harmony driven folk music”, featuring “Story and Tune”.

AUGUST 3

“Sundae in the Park” all afternoon in Sellwood Park: For over forty years, the first Sunday in August has been devoted to “Sundae in the Park” in upper Sellwood Park, and this year is no exception. Live music, ice cream, and lots more…bring the family and spend the afternoon at Sellwood Park, courtesy of SMILE and Sellwood Community House. Free, but bring some money for the ice cream and food offerings. Sellwood Park is on S.E. 7th Avenue, just north of the Sellwood Pool.

SMILE History Committee “just down the hill” today: As always, the SMILE History Committee is participating in Sundae in the Park, but instead of the usual table in Sellwood Park, it will be just down the hill at the south entrance to the park at Oaks Pioneer Church, at S.E. Grand and Spokane Streets. There you will find historic neighborhood photos, maps, and experts to answer questions about neighborhood history. Copies of Evangeline Nyden’s book “Old Sellwood” will be available for $5.00/copy (cash please). That’s all afternoon, between noon and 5 p.m. at the historic Oaks Pioneer Church, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Entrance is on S.E. 57th Avenue, about 500 feet south of Duke Street. Just walk in the gate and through the Green Thumb Community Orchard.
