Salmon, such as this one caught near Astoria, are among the three species raised in Oregon hatcheries. The other species are trout and steelhead.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is hosting a Nov. 13 meeting as part of the agency’s efforts to chart a sustainable future for state hatcheries.

The meeting runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at ODFW’s Salem headquarters in the commission room with a virtual option.

At this meeting, ODFW will describe the hatchery assessment process, including the work of its contractors and engagement of the public.

ODFW will share hatchery alternatives evaluated by its contractors and a small group of stakeholder representatives and discuss findings from these efforts. ODFW will also solicit public input on a set of factors relevant to the agency’s evaluation of the hatchery system.

A thorough review and assessment of 14 state-owned hatcheries was directed by the 2023 Oregon Legislature and conducted by third party contractors.

More information is on ODFW’s web page for the assessment. Click the link at the top of the page to sign up for email updates.
