- After the victim was rushed to hospital, his personal effects were still strewn across S.E. Foster Road as officers talked with witnesses outside the bar he reportedly had been patronizing.
Pedestrians and bike riders have been struck and injured — even killed — by careless, unheeding vehicle drivers at an alarmingly high rate on S.E. Foster Road.

But the 35-year-old driver of a 2012 Nissan Altima sedan didn’t have a chance to avoid hitting a pedestrian on June 29, at about 9:30 pm, on S.E. Foster Road between 70th and 71st Avenues.
“Officers believe the pedestrian was crossing Foster Road from the north to the south side when he was struck by a westbound vehicle,” explained Portland Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Peter Simpson at the scene. “The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.”
Witnesses in the area said that a man, later identified as 56-year-old Gregory Thomas, had walked out of Red’s Bar & Grill and attempted to cross S.E. Foster Road mid-block when he was struck.
“Based on the initial investigation, it does not appear that either speed or intoxicants played a role in the driver striking Mr. Thomas,” Simpson later stated. “It does appear, however, that Mr. Thomas was under the influence of alcohol, which may have contributed to his stepping into traffic.”
No arrests have been made or citations issued in this case, but Traffic investigators will continue with their investigation, Simpson added. “Mr. Thomas remains in critical condition at a Portland area hospital.”
