Brooklyn neighborhood business owner markets invention. Carson Smith of Brooklyn has invented what is called the “BEAMii Lock Light”. This touch-sensor light is used to shine on locks at night. Carson advises that he came up with the idea after standing at his door in the dark fumbling through his keys; he had a porch light, but it did not light up either his door or the keyhole. Frustrated by the fact he could not get into his own home easily, Carson was struck with an idea of a light that can be affixed to any door above a lock, “to help you see your keys and keyhole, giving you access to your home safely”. BEAMii is already selling at Fred Meyer, Hi-School Pharmacy, Amazon.com, Improvements.com, and a few local shops in the Greater Portland Area. BEAMii runs on a long-life lithium battery that should give years of service before requiring replacement. The light turns off automatically after 45 seconds to avoid draining the battery. This ‘group setting’ keeps treatment costs low ($15 + a military discount to current/previous service members), and creates a shared environment where many people who may feel in isolation, or unable to function in society due to difficulties following an injury, can come together in a quiet setting and support one another in their healing, and know they are not the only one living with such difficulties.” You can reach him at 503/250-0660.
Westmoreland artist in Portland Building exhibition. Westmoreland artist Christy Hawkins, held an artist’s reception on July 13 at her installation in the lobby of the Portland Building. From 4 to 6 pm, visitors could see the show and meet the artist, who was easily identified by the dress she wore — made out of the same fabrics prevalent in the show’s landscape. Melanie Bishop, on the faculty of Prescott College in Arizona, present at the opening, commented, “The textile scene created by Hawkins is an imagined outdoor nature setting, with a background containing sky and clouds, mountains and trees. In the foreground is a 3-D campsite, complete with full-sized tent made of sticks and an original quilt by Hawkins, and a campfire with logs and flames, encircled by rocks, some of which have critters sewn to their undersides. The whole scene is soft, puffy, quilted, welcoming.” Hawkins says in her artist’s statement that she was aiming to equate the natural world with the warmth, softness and comfort of a beloved blanket. Christy Hawkins is one of three student artists (she attends Portland State) selected by RACC for this year’s shows in the Portland Building.
