Home businesspeople learn of expert help – available free

Bill Rooney, formerly a public relations expert for Georgia Pacific and Louisiana Pacific, and now with SCORE, will discuss – at the July 15 meeting of the area-wide Association of Home Businesses – the various consultations and services available to them through the nonprofit SCORE program. The July meeting of the Association of Home Businesses, on the third Thursday evening, 6-9 pm, at SMILE Station, S.E. 13th and Tenino, a block south of Tacoma Street, in Sellwood. A buffet supper is included; guests welcome; you don’t have to have a home business to attend. $10 charge. RSVP requested for meal planning. SWBA brings back the “Passport” promotion

The Sellwood Westmoreland Business Alliance business association announces that the popular “Passport” promotion for shoppers will return on Saturday, August 7th. A “passport” booklet will be available at participating businesses in Sellwood and Westmoreland; customers are encouraged to get the booklet stamped by as many participating businesses as possible on that one day. Purchases are not necessary to get a stamp. Those gathering at least 8 stamps from various businesses will be entered in a general prize drawing; those obtaining 14 or more stamps will be in the drawing for the grand prize. A “Passport Village” will be set up in the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot, on Milwaukie Avenue just north of Bybee, to allow additional merchants outside the normal walking area to participate and stamp Passports. Once again this year, included will be a free health fair by Providence Milwaukie Hospital and Northwest Primary Care, at Westmoreland’s Meyer Boys & Girls Club at Milwaukie and Ogden. Included in the fair will be a bike rodeo, local holistic health practitioners, fitness experts, organic gardeners, and more. Details available online at: www.sellwoodwestmoreland.com.

Frozen dessert cart joins food carts in Sellwood

Kevin Bell announces he has opened his own “Oregon Ice Works” frozen dessert cart on the corner of S.E. 13th and Lexington in Sellwood, where other food carts have drawn considerable attention recently. He reports that he offers a variety of fresh fruit Italian ice as well as coconut milk ice cream, with weekend and holiday specials all summer. In addition, Bell is working with the Sellwood branch of the Multnomah County Library to offer discounts to young readers who present their Summer Reading Gamecard at the cart. The “Oregon Ice Works” cart is open Tuesday through Sunday from 12:30 pm through 8 or 9 pm (longer on the weekends).

Elemental Arts opens in Brooklyn with event

Elemental Arts, which recently moved from Westmoreland into the Brooklyn neighborhood, held a networking event – and food drive for the Oregon Food Bank -- called “Get off Facebook and Meet Face to Face”, on the evening of Thursday, July 1st, at its new location at 1133 S.E. Pershing Street (Entrance on Milwaukie Avenue, four blocks south of Powell). Canned food donations for the Oregon Food Bank were collected.

“The Woods” observes first anniversary

“The Woods”, the acoustic and folk music venue operating in the former location of Wilhelm’s Funeral Home on S.E. Milwaukie in Westmoreland, has been open for a year, and announced two nights in June on which they will observed their anniversary: On Friday, June 18, Mike Coykendall and the Golden Shag shared the stage with “Pancake Breakfast”. The following night, Saturday, June 19, the two bands performing were Monarques and Black Whales. The Woods is located at 6637 S.E. Milwaukie Avenue; because spirits are served, must be 21 or older to be admitted.

Four local artists featured at Janovec Gallery

At Brooklyn’s Janovec Art Gallery, owner Madeline Janovec has invited Suzanne Rexford to curate a month long exhibition three local artists for a show called “STREAM PUNK”. Suzanne Rexford was formally trained in silversmithing, blacksmithing, and jewelry making, and she will present her own metal work, and will include three additional artists: Chris Barrett, known as a maker of remarkable chain mail, will be showing work in welded arts; Danielle Richwine will be exhibiting unique metal sculptures; and Rich Mackin, known for his activism, cartoons, and books. All will participate in a public “First Friday” reception at the Gallery (S.E. Milwaukie Avenue at Holgate Boulevard), 6-9 pm on July 2. The exhibition will continue all month, noon till 5 pm, Fridays through Sundays.

WCBA meets in morning on July 13

The Woodstock Community Business Association (WCBA) successfully experimented with a morning meeting in June, and decided to have another in July. The meetings are always on the second Tuesday of each month; this month the meeting will be at 9 am at Mickey Finn’s, on the southwest corner of S.E. 44th and Woodstock Boulevard. Open to all. The WCBA is the prime organizer of the Woodstock Parade and Festival, scheduled for 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, July 17.
