After securing funding from a variety of local sources, Winterhaven School now has installed a new array of playground equipment in the adjacent Brooklyn School Park. Winterhaven parent Diane Ehnes spearheaded the drive to acquire the funding, and Portland Parks and Recreation paid for the installation.
In addition to offering a variety of colorful climbing options, the minimalist design is expected to reduce graffiti by presenting few surfaces for vandalism.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held June 15th — the last day of school before the summer break for Winterhaven students.
The new equipment features modernistic red plastic slides, various climbing ladders, bouncy chairs, stationary and spinning overhead hanging units, and a triangular three-tiered “jungle gym” with red cargo nets.
There is also a manually-operated spinning feature dubbed the “Rudy-tron”, in honor of retiring Principal Rudy Rudolph, who made a strong and successful effort to finish the project before the end of the school year. The new equipment is spread out between two previously-installed playground structures, thus completing the playground scene at the school.
An adjacent plaque set in cement thanks donors who made the project possible. Acknowledged are a grant from the Fred Meyer Fund, donations from the Brooklyn Action Corps neighborhood association and Advantis Credit Union, as well as assorted funds donated by members of the Winterhaven community.
